University of Illinois at Springfield - UIS Overview

  About Greek Life at UIS

UIS is a smaller public university in Springfield, Illinois — the state capital — and the Greek system here reflects that intimate campus size. It's not the sprawling Greek scene you'd find at U of I Urbana-Champaign, but there's a real mix of organizations across a few different councils, and the chapters that are here tend to be close-knit.

The organizations on campus span both historically Black Greek-letter organizations and more traditional IFC and Panhellenic chapters. On the NPHC side, you've got fraternities like Alpha Phi Alpha and Phi Beta Sigma, and sororities including Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta. The Panhellenic side includes Sigma Sigma Sigma, and IFC is represented by chapters like Delta Kappa Epsilon and Phi Kappa Tau. Sigma Lambda Beta and Gamma Phi Omega round things out on the multicultural side of the house.

Because UIS skews heavily toward commuter students and has a significant graduate and nontraditional student population, Greek life isn't the central social engine it might be at a big residential flagship. That said, the chapters that are active tend to be genuinely engaged — they show up for community service, campus events, and philanthropy efforts that connect back to both university life and the Springfield area.

Don't expect a Greek Row or chapter houses — most organizations operate without dedicated housing, which is pretty typical for a campus this size. Recruitment tends to be more informal and relationship-driven than the structured, week-long rush processes you'd see at larger schools. If you're looking to connect with a chapter, showing up to interest meetings and campus events is usually the most direct path in.

Overall, it's a smaller Greek community, but it covers a solid range of councils and traditions, from NPHC divine nine chapters with deep national histories to IFC and multicultural organizations with active local presences.
