Is rush really that competitive here? How likely is it that you don't get a bid at all?

Each sorority is required to give out 50 bids. Some will give more, but many won't. 23x50 =1150 guaranteed bids which is abut 1/2 of the women signed up. Many women do drop, but keep in mind it's a very emotional week. Some women will see much success and others will not - and there's really no good reason. Many good PNMs are left bid less. Some will drop if they lose a majority of the houses after round one - happens a lot! PNMs feel rejected and hurt (not to mentioned embarrassed) because they can not understand why they were released from sororities where they felt comfortable and had good conversations. I can't explain it either except that they have to cut and some great women get screwed in the process. It sucks. My advice - the so-called top tier houses are the hardest to get into and if you know you're probably not getting in there - and believe me you know - then don't rank them high and seriously consider putting them last on your list and focus on the ones that you realistically have a chance to get it.

So by the numbers it looks like only a small handful of girls don't get into houses. That is a relief. I was very worried about rush.

You are making some major assumptions. Over 900 women who came back to school early, went to parties in the FREEZING cold and did not join a sorority. These were not women who were not committed. Most of these women are not dropping because they change their mind about rush or not longer want to join a sorority. They are dropping because they are getting 8 or even 4 invites back for 16 party, 2 or sometimes 0 back for 9 party, etc and have to watch women around them get invited back to everything they want and they don't understand why and they feel rejected. It's devastating and demoralizing and probably the thing I hate most about our Greek life.
