how easy is it to get a bid from a top tier frat?

Let me ask you why it's that important to be a "top tier" fraternity? Honestly, the brotherhood varies from chapter to chapter. There is strong brotherhood in lots of chapters of ALL tiers. Tier is no indicator of the quality if experience you'll have. It's also no indicator of social life. Some of the top tiers have the most boring parties. The best parties I have been to are the chapters that you would consider good but not tops (Phi Delt, Delts, Phi Kapps, Pi Kapps). At midnight you see a lot of the sorority women leave their (top tier) pair and go somewhere else that's more fun or where their friends are. Pick a fraternity where you fit in and actually like the guys. Where do you want to be on a daily basis?

Honestly, unless you already know several guys in the house that will put in a good word for you, you are from Chicago or Indianapolis, your family is very wealthy, or a combination of the three, you're wasting your time. Look elsewhere. Don't rush top houses simply because they're top houses. Especially if you don't have connections because you will most likely be disappointed. Rush wisely man.

If you just say you wanna ride in little5 and are normal you can get a bid at most top houses even if you don't already know somebody. I know from experience. Especially after several top houses didn't even qualify this year. They are gonna give bids out to anyone who can help not embarrass themselves next year.
