thoughts on sorority life + rush tips?

by: rising sophomore

hello! from looking around a bit on this forum, it seems like there are a lot more fraternity guys on here than sorority girls but i thought id give it a shot anyway! :) im wrapping up my freshman year. i did not rush, and i also just had quite a sad year in general (mental health struggles, family struggles, didnt make friends). i feel as though i would not fit in TOO well at a sorority since i am not stunningly beautiful and i can be a bit shy, but i am so interested! i am thinking of rushing next year. i am curious about how difficult/not difficult it is to be in a sorority even if you dont fit the stereotype, and also what kind of tips anyone may have about rushing. the pros and cons, costs, highlights, requirements, anything really! even just small anecdotes or tips! thank you and have a nice day :) <3

Hey! I honestly would go through the process and see what happens. I’m not going to lie. The process is pretty brutal and I’m assuming there’s going to be even more girls rushing next year, but you really do never know. When you go through the process, it’s so important to think about the big picture and if you would really fit in at the place or if you just like the aesthetic of it. I love my house and don’t know what I would do without it ❤️

ill be brutally honest and say that yes a lot of houses (esp the top ones) choose by looks and qualities that you might deem “stereotypical.” also i would say that being shy isnt bad but isnt ideal in greek life. personally i think its worth it. i have a fun social life, ive made amazing friends, i feel motivated in my studies because of gpa requirements. but there are hard and stressful moments, and rush season is gonna be crazy next year, since so many people want to go to iu since the nattys. however, there are like 22 houses, so your chances of getting into 1 arent CRAZY slim. i would say try it out. if you get dropped, you get dropped. if you dont like it, you can drop. but maybe youll love it

definitely go for it!! Rush is a tough process for sure but it seems like you already have the right mindset! All chapters have their own charm and with so many people in Greek life you’re bound to make friends :) biggest tips are to focus on where you connect with (not what others say), don’t get super attached to a specific chapter (I had PNMs in the past be super attached and want to drop when they didn’t get it only to end up in love with the house they ended up at), and be yourself! Wishing you best of luck!
