so not all chapters do informal but the ones that do the basics of it: sororities will hold some informal events where u can meet sisters and these are open to anyone to go to, you fill out a form saying like some interests you have/involvement and your availability and you get paired with a girl or two to go on coffee dates and learn more about the chapter. You then can receive a bid!
