Is it weird to join a sorority if you’re not rich?
by: helpI’m a sophomore and I didn’t rush last year because I didn’t have the money for a sorority. I’ve saved up but am still barely scraping it to rush this spring. I know most sorority girls are rich and I was wondering if they would look at me differently or I would be left out because I wouldn’t be able to afford a lot of the things they can. I know this sounds stupid but I feel like it’s a good concern to have

Hey girlie! I was also intimidated rushing as a sophomore from a lower-income background, I totally get it. It’s not “weird” or looked down upon whatsoever! I absolutely love my sorority and I have never felt left out. I would recommend doing some research on the different chapters because I know that some of them offer scholarships to offer a bit of financial help. I hope you decide to go Greek, good luck on your journey!
P.S. informal recruitment (offered fall and spring semester) is much more laid back and little less expensive. If you do decide to go with formal recruitment PHA offers free rental dresses donated by members of every chapter called “The Dressing Room”! There are plenty of recourses offered to members that need a little extra help. :)

I agree with the other commenter. Definitely look into the dues/live in requirements of different houses. Some chapters (not all) can work with you on making it more affordable. Informal is going on right now and could be a good way to start making connections with chapters you’re interested in (even if you still decide to do formal in the spring). Good luck!
