informal recruitment

I dropped when after 16 party after only being invited back to two houses for 9 party. they were houses i genuinely could not see myself in and would not feel comfortable paying the thousands of dollars it costs to be in sorority.
im aware it is not guaranteed but, How does informal work? is anyone eligible to go back to houses for informal or do you need to be invited? Also, how long does informal last until bids are given out/whats the process?
