still sisters
by: AncientgreekHey all you PNMs. Just want to share my sorority story at IU after many years. I went through open recruitment at my mother’s behest. Really wasn’t interested in pledging, but found a real quirky but uber cool house, with young women of all stripes: some stunningly attractive, some not, some really smart, some not so much, some rich, some poor. We worked hard during rush, and let every girl we talked to know that we were not cookie cutter and appreciated each sister for who they were. A true sisterhood. Many years later, a friend who was in a ‘top’ sorority at IU told me what a lousy experience it was for her, and that she’d wished she’d been a little more introspective and not been blinded by the artifice of tiers. She hasn’t stayed in contact with any of her top tier sisters while my pledge class tries to get together at least once a year. We were in each other’s weddings, and have supported each other through life’s trials and tribulations. It’s not just for four years, these are the people who will be with you for a lifetime. Good luck and remember to follow your heart.
