why have tiers?

Tiers. Why?
Coming from a consistently solid middle sorority, I've been to a tad "higher" pairs and we've been paired with some "lower" tier houses. Why tier in the first place?
To be honest I've had a ton of fun at both ends of the system.
I feel like most houses have nice guys, alcohol, and music. So what makes some frats become higher up/"better" than the rest?
and for what purpose? just a random thought. :)
also this could just be coincidence, but when I've actually had a full conversation with a "top tier" sorority, they seemed insincere and kind of snotty. but I haven't noticed that with any other. this could be coincidence but ARE top tier houses just a bunch of snobs?

Like I said, I'm not a bottom. I am in a solid middle. But your response makes me wonder even more about the whole tier system...why does it matter? Why make bottom tier sound so awful? I have friends in a lot of houses. They have just as much fun as other houses whether they are bottom/middle/top tier.

Agreed...some girls get lucky during rush, some middle tiers chose their houses over top tiers, and some girls had bad days. That said, the tier system works oftentimes because, for example, tridelts and kids from delta chi would never mesh. For the middle tiers up there isnt a huge difference though.

by the time ur a senior u don't care about this tier crap and quite franlly are over being greek altogether. and im looking out my third street window as I write. just dont want to say it out loud but im far from the only one. have loved my time here but I need to branch out. thats why u see seniors having more non-greek friends. get over this tier crap it hurts us more than helps us.

the thing is-they shouldn't matter.
but the idea of tiers has been around for so long, and the tiers have been established for so long, that the greek system keeps going with it!
it's not like we created it. we are just going with what we know.
everyone knows you can have fun anywhere if you MAKE it fun.
But, I do think top tiers are really the only one that matters. It's hard to rank in order after the middle.

Indiana’s Greek environment is one of the most toxic I’ve ever seen. I went to a Theta Chi philanthropy event with my friend and her sorority sisters at her school and I was awestruck by the differences in their Greek environment as opposed to ours. All of their sororities and fraternities for the most part support each other, pair with each other, go to everyone’s philanthropies, and actually talk to each other and treat each other with dignity. What a concept...

what difference does it make whether the girl is top middle or bottom? i am in what is considered a lower tier house. but guess what. I ranked some "top tier" houses low, some high. Some kept me, some dropped me. But I went with one I loved, which happened to be lower tier.
I get so mad when people complain/are embarrassed about their chapter's tier. If you are having fun and like the people- it shouldn't matter. Maybe you'll realize that once youre a senior as well.
But until then, stop encouraging the tiers. It's dumb. I know some girls in top houses who say the girls are mean to the new members. Who cares what tier it is? Just have fun.
