Indiana University Bloomington - IU Overview

  About Greek Life at IU

Indiana University Bloomington is a large Big Ten school with around 45,000 undergrads, and the Greek system here reflects that scale. There are dozens of fraternities and sororities active on campus, spread across multiple governing councils — the Interfraternity Council (IFC) covers most of the traditionally male chapters, Panhellenic oversees the women's sororities, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) represents the historically Black fraternities and sororities. There's also a Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) presence on campus.

IU's Greek system is genuinely a big part of campus social life, especially for students who live on or near the Row. The concentration of chapter houses along fraternity row gives the scene a pretty visible footprint — this isn't a commuter school situation where Greek life is tucked away. Most of the major IFC and Panhellenic chapters have houses, and a lot of social activity runs through them, particularly on weekends.

Formal recruitment for sororities happens in the fall and is structured and fairly intense, as it is at most large Panhellenic schools. Fraternity recruitment runs on a more informal timeline, with formal rush also taking place in the fall. NPHC chapters follow their own intake processes, which are separate from the formal rush calendar and typically happen throughout the year.

Philanthropy is a consistent part of the culture here. Chapters regularly host fundraisers and charity events, and it's common to see Greek organizations partnering with campus causes or competing in philanthropy events throughout the year. Little 500, IU's famous bike race inspired by the Indianapolis 500, is one of the most iconic traditions on campus and has deep ties to the broader student community — Greek chapters field teams and it's a major event on the spring calendar.

Overall, Greek life touches a meaningful chunk of campus social activity at IU, but it coexists with a large independent student population. Bloomington is a college town with plenty going on beyond the Row, so the Greek scene is prominent without being the only game in town.
