Florida A&M University - FAMU Overview

  About Greek Life at FAMU

FAMU is a historically Black university in Tallahassee, and that context shapes everything about how Greek life works here. The organizations on campus are all part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council — the Divine Nine — which makes sense given the school's history and culture. There's no IFC or traditional Panhellenic council here. This is an NPHC school through and through.

The chapters present include Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, and Iota Phi Theta on the fraternity side, with Alpha Kappa Alpha, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho representing the sororities. That's a solid representation of the Divine Nine, and these organizations have deep roots at HBCUs across the South.

NPHC membership works differently than what you'd see at a school with IFC fraternities. Forget the week-long open house rush format. Here, intake is more selective, more structured, and typically happens after you've been on campus for at least a semester or more. You need to meet GPA requirements, get to know members over time, and demonstrate genuine commitment to the organization's values before you're ever considered. It's a longer road than a bid day balloon drop.

On campus, Greek-lettered organizations carry a lot of cultural weight. Strolling — the competitive, choreographed step and stroll performances — is a big deal at FAMU and at HBCUs generally. Greeks show out at homecoming especially, which is one of the most anticipated events of the year. Tallahassee's FAMU homecoming has a well-earned reputation for drawing alumni back from all over the country.

Don't expect a Greek Row with chapter houses lined up next to each other. NPHC chapters typically don't operate out of dedicated housing the way large IFC fraternities do. Chapters here are more community-based, with members living throughout campus and off-campus housing. The presence is felt through events, yard shows, and campus programming rather than through a physical house on a specific street.

Philanthropy and community service are central to how Divine Nine organizations define themselves, and FAMU's chapters reflect that. Each organization has its own national focus areas — tutoring programs, voter registration, health awareness campaigns — and local chapters usually carry those initiatives onto campus and into the Tallahassee community.
