City College of New York - CCNY Overview

  About Greek Life at CCNY

CCNY is a large public commuter school in upper Manhattan, part of the City University of New York system, and the Greek community here reflects that commuter campus reality — it's smaller and more tight-knit than what you'd find at a traditional residential university.

The organizations active on campus span a few different councils. You've got chapters affiliated with the Interfraternity Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and the Multicultural Greek Council, which gives you a sense of how broad the representation is even in a smaller system. NPHC fraternities and sororities like Phi Beta Sigma and Delta Sigma Theta have a presence here, alongside MGC organizations like Iota Nu Delta, Sigma Lambda Beta, Lambda Pi Chi, and Theta Phi Gamma. There's also Tau Epsilon Phi and Kappa Sigma and Gamma Nu Delta rounding things out.

Don't expect a Greek Row or chapter houses. CCNY is in Harlem, and like most urban commuter schools, there's no dedicated Greek housing on or near campus. Chapters function without permanent house spaces, so events and activities tend to happen on campus grounds or off-site venues.

Because so many CCNY students commute, hold jobs, and juggle heavy course loads — especially in the engineering and architecture programs the school is known for — Greek life occupies a more niche space in campus social life compared to schools where students live on campus and Greek activity drives the weekend social calendar. That said, chapters here are genuinely active in community service, step shows, and cultural programming, which tends to be where a lot of the energy is concentrated.

Rush and intake processes vary by council. IFC chapters typically do more open recruitment, while NPHC and MGC organizations follow membership intake processes that have their own timelines and requirements. If you're interested in a specific chapter, the best move is connecting directly with members on campus since the process isn't always as publicly advertised as it might be at bigger state schools.

Overall, this is a smaller Greek community operating in one of the most urban college settings in the country, which shapes everything from how chapters recruit to how they host events and build membership.
