Allen University is a small, historically Black university in Columbia, South Carolina, affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church. With a tight-knit campus community and a student body that runs in the hundreds rather than the thousands, the Greek system here reflects that intimate scale — but it's made up of some of the most historically significant organizations in Black Greek history.
All of the fraternities and sororities at AU are part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, commonly known as the NPHC or the "Divine Nine." That's the framework that governs Black Greek-letter organizations nationally, and it's the only council operating here. The fraternities represented are Alpha Phi Alpha and Phi Beta Sigma. On the sorority side, you've got Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta — all four of which are active on campus.
Intake at NPHC organizations works differently than the open recruitment you might picture at a big state school. There's no formal rush week with events and bid day traditions. Instead, NPHC chapters run membership intake processes that tend to be more selective and happen on their own timeline, often with academic and service requirements built in. If you're interested in going Greek here, the move is to get involved on campus first, meet current members, and learn about each organization's history and values over time.
At a school this size, Greek-lettered members tend to be visible and active in campus leadership, community service, and events. NPHC orgs nationally have deep roots in civic engagement and scholarship, and that culture carries through at AU. Don't expect a Greek Row or chapter houses — that's not how most NPHC chapters operate at small HBCUs. The presence is more about programming, step shows, and community involvement than real estate.
Columbia itself gives the school a decent backdrop, and the broader HBCU Greek culture in the region — especially with neighboring institutions — means there's a wider scene to tap into beyond just what's happening on AU's campus.
