University of Bridgeport - UB Overview

  About Greek Life at UB

University of Bridgeport is a smaller private school in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and its Greek community reflects that intimate campus environment. The organizations here are all part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council tradition, which is the historic alliance of the nine Black fraternities and sororities — commonly known as the Divine Nine. That's the foundation of what's active on campus right now.

The chapters present include Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and two sororities, Alpha Kappa Alpha and Sigma Gamma Rho. These are three of the most established organizations in the NPHC, with deep roots going back over a century nationally. At UB specifically, the Greek community is on the smaller side, which means individual chapters tend to be close-knit and tight with their members.

NPHC recruitment works differently than what you might see at big state schools with IFC or Panhellenic rush. There's no formal rush week with parties and bid day the way it works at larger institutions. Instead, these organizations use an intake process, which is typically more structured, selective, and tied to academic requirements and demonstrated campus involvement. Timing and availability can also vary from semester to semester depending on national chapter guidelines.

UB itself is a mid-size commuter-heavy school, so Greek life isn't the central axis of the social scene the way it might be at a large residential campus. Chapters here tend to be involved in community service, campus events, and NPHC step shows or probate presentations, which are some of the more visible Greek moments on campus. There's no traditional Greek Row or chapter housing tied to these organizations — they operate through campus programming rather than residential spaces.
