pref. 3 house and no bid

by: Sad

I am so sad that I went to preference at 3 houses and did not get a bid. Are there any other options for me to join a sorority at Michigan?

My daughter is in the same situation. What a terrible system. Not one of her out of state friends including her, got a bid after 3 preference parties and maxing out on all parties. She is done with Greek life and is basically ok. Two of her friends with their parents friends are likely to transfer. They feel humiliated. Wonderful, pretty smart girls. What a shame that the Greeks allow this to happen. I urge all incoming freshman who are out of staters to rethink pledging. Join clubs instead

Meant to say with their parents' blessing

They are missing the point to what makes a good sorority girl. We are from Michigan, I was in a sorority so thought my daughter would really benefit from it. Rush sounded like a disaster. My daughter did get a bid, but not from her favorite house. I think having rush during school puts undue stress on these girls. Remember: school takes priority over everything!

Why are you on Greek rank? You're a mom for God sake. Let your daughter deal with her own issues

Sorry you are feeling down but try not to. There are only so many houses that can take only so many girls. If double of that number rushes there are cuts. Sometimes it works out that there enough drops, etc so the chances go up.
Its not an exact science and mistakes are made at times, but it doesn't take away the sting. If you are a freshman try rushing again as a sophomore. Try to make friends with a lot of people in clubs etc but also those in Greek life as well.
Don't get down on yourselves. You feel sad now but there iare so many great things on the campus to enjoy as well. Greek life is a small percentage of it.

Thank you for your kind response. She will. She spent her evening talking down friend who were hysterically crying. She is very over the experience and she and some friends are scouting out houses to rent for next year.

Don't give up on Michigan so fast because of this unfortunate situation. You will be giving up an amazing education from a world class institution. Encourage your daughter to have an open mind and consider going for a COB from houses that have room for her. Aephi has an amazing sisterhood with some of the sweetest girls on campus. Tell her to look into that option

Sorry your daughter did not get a bid. Something is not right because if they went to three pref parties and listed all on their ranking card, they would have a bid. Perhaps not from their first choice house, but a bid. Quota is based on the number of girls signing bid cards. It is not set before that so an increase in girls participating would not matter.

This is a very unusual situation. It's very unlikely that a number of girls would each go to 3 pref parties, list all 3 and none of the group get a bid. Even though they went to 3 pref parties did they put all 3 on their card after the parties???

I also think it's crazy to leave Michigan just because of a bad rush experience. This is not the SEC and not being Greek is not the end all of a fabulous experience at Michigan.

My daughter, an out of stater, had a roller coaster of a rush ride at Michigan. It was very hard and she got a bid, but not by one of her favorites going through. By her sophomore year she LOVED her house and the other girls and couldn't imagine herself anywhere else. If they really want the Greek experience, they should try again with an open mind and maximize their options.

Also, some groups meet quota, but lose a few girls right away....maybe your daughter will get a call???

I agree completely. I would understand transferring if this was Alabama, but greek life does not dominate the social scene at Michigan. She can try to join again or find a niche somewhere else on campus.

This does not sound right. Are you sure they listed ALL three houses on their pref cards? Because if they went to three pref parties and only listed two, then yes they could have been without a bid because they didn't "maximize their options" More details, please.

Correct. The only way a girl is guaranteed a bid is if she wrote down all three (or two or one) of her houses after Pref. Shame on those girls for not giving other houses a try.

My daughter put all 3 on her pref card and got no bid. Her out of state friends(10) did too. And they got no bid

Mom....go on Greek Chat and you'll maybe get a better explanation of what happened. That said, it's extremely unusual to have people that list 3 houses after pref and not get a bid....for 10 people to know each other, all pref 3 houses and no one get a bid is either impossible or Michigan seriously f$&ked up their quota numbers. Mom, I'm not sure if you are Greek yourself, but rush isn't easy and its even tougher if you don't know what to expect.

Best I can figure my daughter was cross bidded. she clarified that not all her friends listed 3 sororities. They were told not to put down three to be fairer to girls who loved their third choice but might lose a bid to them
