Lander University - LU Overview

  About Greek Life at LU

Lander University is a smaller public school in Greenwood, South Carolina, and its Greek system reflects that intimate campus feel. This isn't a massive flagship with hundreds of chapters and a dedicated Greek Row — it's a more close-knit setup where the organizations that are here tend to be pretty well embedded in campus life.

On the sorority side, you've got both Panhellenic and NPHC representation. Panhellenic chapters include Gamma Phi Beta, Phi Mu, and Zeta Tau Alpha, while the NPHC side includes Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta. The fraternity presence is smaller, with Delta Sigma Phi representing IFC on campus. So if you're coming in expecting a sprawling multi-council system, just know you're working with a tighter roster.

Recruitment works a bit differently at a school this size. Panhellenic formal recruitment typically runs in the fall and follows a structured rounds format, though it's a lot less intense than what you'd see at a bigger SEC school. NPHC chapters recruit on their own timeline and through a membership intake process rather than a traditional rush week — that's standard for NPHC nationally, not specific to Lander.

As for housing, don't expect chapter houses. Most Greek organizations at Lander operate without dedicated housing, so social events and chapter business happen on campus or at rented venues rather than at a fraternity or sorority house.

Philanthropy and community service are a real part of how these chapters stay active and visible on campus. Each organization tends to run its own signature events tied to their national philanthropy partners, and those events are usually open to the broader student body. Greek life is a part of the social fabric here, though it's one piece of a campus that also leans heavily on athletics, student clubs, and community ties to Greenwood.
