Washington and Jefferson College - WJC Overview

  About Greek Life at WJC

Washington and Jefferson College is a small liberal arts school in Washington, PA, about 30 miles south of Pittsburgh, and the Greek system there is genuinely central to how social life works on campus. For a school this size, having both IFC fraternities and Panhellenic sororities with real activity across multiple chapters is a significant presence. A solid chunk of the undergraduate population ends up going Greek, which means these organizations carry a lot of weight when it comes to social programming, housing, and general campus culture.

On the fraternity side, IFC chapters include Alpha Tau Omega, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Tau Delta, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Gamma Delta, and Phi Kappa Psi. Panhellenic is made up of Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Pi Beta Phi. There's no NPHC or MGC presence listed currently, so the Greek community here is primarily IFC and Panhellenic.

Recruitment at a small residential school like W&J tends to feel pretty personal. You're not dealing with a Big Ten-style system where hundreds of people are moving through mass events. It's more of a get-to-know-you process where chapter size and campus geography mean you'll run into members constantly, not just during formal rush. That said, the process is still structured, with formal recruitment periods for both fraternities and sororities.

Several of the fraternities have chapter houses near or on campus, which is a big part of how social life flows at W&J. Philanthropy and community service are consistent threads across both IFC and Panhellenic chapters, which is pretty standard for smaller liberal arts schools that put some emphasis on civic engagement. The Greek organizations here also tend to be involved in broader campus leadership and student government, so membership often extends beyond just the social dimension.
