Jackson State University - JSU Overview

  About Greek Life at JSU

Jackson State University is an HBCU in Jackson, Mississippi, and like most HBCUs, its Greek system is rooted entirely in the National Pan-Hellenic Council — the historic organization that houses the nine Divine Nine fraternities and sororities. There's no IFC or Panhellenic council here. NPHC is the Greek scene at JSU, full stop.

The chapters you'll find on campus include fraternities Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma, along with sororities Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. That's a solid representation of the Divine Nine — most of the major organizations are active and visible on campus.

If you're coming from a predominantly white institution background, the membership process here works pretty differently. NPHC chapters don't do the same open recruitment weekends you'd see at schools with IFC or Panhellenic systems. Interest periods, informational sessions, and intake processes are more structured and often happen on a chapter-by-chapter timeline. The culture around going Greek at an HBCU tends to be serious — membership is treated as a lifelong commitment, not just a four-year social situation.

On an HBCU campus like JSU, Greek organizations are deeply tied to community service, step shows, and campus events. Probate shows — the public reveal of new members — are a big deal and draw crowds. Greeks are visible at homecoming, yard events, and throughout campus life in a way that's pretty central to the overall student experience.

Don't expect Greek Row lined with houses here. NPHC chapters at HBCUs typically don't operate out of chapter houses the way IFC fraternities do at large state schools. Their presence is more about the yard, campus events, and community roots than residential real estate.
