Gannon University - GU Overview

  About Greek Life at GU

Gannon University is a mid-size Catholic university in Erie, Pennsylvania, with a student body small enough that Greek life plays a recognizable role on campus without dominating the entire social scene. The system here is on the smaller side overall, with a handful of IFC fraternities and a Panhellenic council overseeing the sororities. The organizations include chapters like Pi Kappa Alpha, Delta Chi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Delta Sigma Phi, Alpha Phi Delta, Zeta Beta Tau, and Delta Kappa Epsilon on the fraternity side, and Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Sigma Tau, Phi Sigma Sigma, and Sigma Sigma Sigma representing Panhellenic.

Because Gannon is a smaller school, the Greek community tends to feel more tight-knit than what you'd find at a large state university. Recruitment isn't the massive, highly produced week-long event you see at Big Ten schools — it's generally a more low-key, personal process where you actually get to know members before committing. That smaller scale means your interactions during rush feel a lot more genuine and less like a performance.

Erie isn't exactly a college town in the traditional sense, so the campus itself becomes more of a social hub, and Greek organizations help fill that role. Chapters here tend to be involved in philanthropy events and community service, which fits with Gannon's broader mission as a Catholic institution that emphasizes civic engagement. You'll see Greek members involved across campus — in student government, athletics, and volunteer programs — rather than existing in a separate bubble.

On the housing front, Gannon doesn't have a traditional Greek Row. Most chapters operate without dedicated chapter houses, which is pretty common for schools of this size and setup. Social events typically happen through other venues on or near campus. That setup shapes the culture a bit — it tends to integrate Greek members into the broader campus community rather than separating them from it.
