South Dakota State University - SDSU Overview

  About Greek Life at SDSU

Brookings is a small college town in eastern South Dakota, and South Dakota State is very much a campus where agriculture, engineering, and Jackrabbit pride shape the social scene. The Greek system here is on the smaller side — a handful of fraternities and a few sororities — but it's a real presence on campus, not just a footnote.

On the fraternity side, you've got IFC-affiliated chapters like Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Lambda Chi Alpha, Delta Chi, Sigma Phi Delta, and Alpha Gamma Rho, along with Farmhouse, which has deep roots in ag-school culture and is common at land-grant universities like SDSU. The sorority side includes Alpha Xi Delta, Chi Omega, and Alpha Omega Epsilon, the last of which is a professional sorority specifically for women in engineering and technical fields — something you don't see everywhere. Panhellenic coordinates the women's recruitment process.

Because SDSU is a land-grant school with a strong agriculture and STEM identity, some of the chapters here reflect that. Alpha Gamma Rho is an ag fraternity, and Farmhouse has similar roots. That's not the whole picture, but it does give the system a slightly different flavor than you'd find at a typical state flagship.

Rush and recruitment here tend to be pretty approachable compared to larger systems at bigger schools. With fewer chapters competing for members, the process feels less overwhelming. Most chapters do have houses, and Greek Row is a real thing on campus — it's where a lot of chapter social life happens.

Greek life at SDSU is more of a meaningful subset of campus culture than a dominant force. The school has a solid athletics program in the Missouri Valley Conference and Summit League, and gamedays draw a wide crowd well beyond the Greek community. Philanthropy events and community service are a consistent part of how chapters stay visible on campus throughout the year.
