University of Maryland, College Park - UMD Overview

  About Greek Life at UMD

College Park is a Big Ten school with over 40,000 undergrads, and the Greek system here reflects that scale. There are multiple governing councils operating on campus — the Interfraternity Council (IFC) oversees the bulk of the men's fraternities, while the Panhellenic Council covers the traditional women's sororities. The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) represents the historically Black Greek-letter organizations, and the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) brings in several culturally-based fraternities and sororities as well. Together, they make up a system with a solid number of chapters across all four councils.

The chapter list is genuinely long. You've got well-known IFC names like Sigma Chi, Phi Gamma Delta, Pi Kappa Alpha, and Sigma Phi Epsilon, plus Panhellenic staples like Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Alpha Chi Omega, and Zeta Tau Alpha. NPHC includes Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and others with deep roots on campus. The MGC side adds organizations like Iota Nu Delta and Sigma Beta Rho. It's a genuinely broad cross-section of what Greek life in America looks like today.

Rush at UMD is pretty typical for a large public university. IFC formal recruitment usually happens in the fall, though many chapters also recruit informally throughout the year. Panhellenic formal recruitment is structured and happens in the fall as well — it's the more organized, scheduled process with rounds and preference nights. If you're interested in NPHC or MGC chapters, those run on their own intake and interest processes that aren't tied to the same fall rush calendar.

Greek life is a real part of the social scene here, but it's not the only game in town. UMD has a massive student body and a ton of clubs, sports, and other outlets, so Greek membership is one path among many. That said, chapters are active — there's a consistent culture of philanthropy events, formal dances, and social programming throughout the semester. The university sits right outside Washington, D.C., which means a lot of students are pulling in internships and spending time in the city, and that energy shapes how members balance chapter involvement with everything else going on.

On the housing side, some of the larger IFC and Panhellenic chapters have houses, many of which are located in the Greek housing area near campus. Not every chapter has its own house, though, so the experience varies depending on which organization you're involved with.
