Southern Arkansas University - SAU Overview

  About Greek Life at SAU

Situated in Magnolia, Arkansas, Southern Arkansas University is a mid-size regional school with a Greek system that's genuinely woven into campus social life. SAU sits in a small town, which means campus-based organizations tend to carry more weight socially than they might at a big urban school — and that's true for Greek chapters here.

The Greek community at SAU includes chapters across multiple councils. You've got IFC and Panhellenic representing the traditionally white fraternities and sororities, and the NPHC organizations — Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma on the fraternity side, and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta on the sorority side — have a solid presence on campus too. There are also some less conventional organizations in the mix, like Beta Upsilon Chi, which is a Christian-based fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia for music students, and Sigma Alpha, which focuses on women in agriculture — fitting given SAU's strong agricultural programs through Alpha Gamma Rho's presence as well.

Recruitment here follows a pretty standard format for a school this size. Panhellenic sororities typically hold formal recruitment in the fall, while fraternity recruitment tends to be a bit more informal and ongoing. It's not the massive, weeks-long production you'd see at an SEC flagship, but chapters are active and the process is taken seriously.

Because Magnolia is a small town, Greek events — social functions, philanthropy weeks, homecoming activities — tend to be visible and well-attended. There isn't a traditional Greek Row lined with massive chapter houses the way you'd see at a larger school, but chapters do have a physical presence on or near campus. Philanthropy and community service are a real part of the culture here, especially among NPHC organizations where service is central to the founding mission of each chapter.

Overall, this is a smaller, more close-knit Greek community where members tend to know each other across chapter lines. The system reflects the broader SAU campus culture — community-oriented, rooted in the region, and more personal than what you'd find at a school three times its size.
