The University of Calgary is a large research university in Alberta's biggest city, and its Greek system is a smaller, more intimate part of campus life compared to what you'd find at most American schools. That's pretty typical for Canadian universities — Greek life exists here, but it doesn't dominate the social scene the way it might at a Big Ten or SEC school.

There are currently a handful of fraternities and sororities active on campus. On the fraternity side, you've got Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI), Kappa Sigma, and Zeta Psi. For sororities, Alpha Gamma Delta and Alpha Omicron Pi are the ones operating here. These chapters fall under IFC and Panhellenic structures respectively, which are the same governing councils you'd see at most North American schools with Greek life.

Recruitment tends to be more low-key than the massive organized rush weeks you hear about at bigger American schools. It's generally easier to connect with individual chapters and get a feel for them without the intense, high-pressure environment that sometimes comes with larger systems. That said, each chapter runs its own recruitment process, so timelines and formality can vary.

Housing is not a defining feature of Greek life at UofC. Most chapters don't have dedicated chapter houses the way you'd see at traditional American campuses with Greek rows. Social events, meetings, and philanthropic activities tend to happen in other spaces around campus or in the city.

Calgary itself is a young, fast-paced city, and the university reflects that — there's a lot going on socially outside of Greek life. The chapters here tend to lean into philanthropy and community events as a way of building their presence on campus. Membership numbers may be smaller than what you'd find at a school of similar size in the U.S., but the chapters that are active here have consistent, engaged memberships.
