Carleton University, Ottawa Canada - CU Overview

  About Greek Life at CU

Carleton University sits in the heart of Ottawa, a mid-size research school that draws a lot of students who are focused on politics, engineering, and public affairs. It's not a traditional "big Greek life" campus the way some large American state schools are, but there's a real and active community here across both fraternities and sororities.

The fraternity side includes chapters like Acacia, Alpha Epsilon Pi, Beta Theta Pi, Kappa Sigma, Omega Psi Phi, Sigma Pi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and Phi Delta Theta. On the sorority side you've got Alpha Omicron Pi, Phi Sigma Sigma, Alpha Pi Phi, Delta Phi Epsilon, Tau Sigma Phi, Delta Psi Delta, and Sigma Gamma Rho. The presence of Omega Psi Phi and Sigma Gamma Rho means there's NPHC representation on campus alongside the more traditional IFC and Panhellenic organizations, which gives the overall community more range than you might expect at a Canadian university this size.

Canadian Greek life in general operates a bit differently than what you'd see at a big American school. Recruitment tends to be lower-key — there's no massive formal rush week with hundreds of students flooding a Greek Row. Most chapters here do their own recruitment events throughout the fall semester, and the process is more informal and relationship-based. Getting involved usually means showing up to open events and getting to know members before any formal commitment happens.

Housing is another thing that's different from the American model. Most chapters at Carleton don't maintain large chapter houses the way fraternities and sororities do at schools in the States. Social events typically happen at rented venues, university spaces, or off-campus locations rather than out of a house owned by the chapter.

Greek organizations here tend to be involved in philanthropy and campus events, and chapters regularly put on fundraisers and community service initiatives. The discussion activity and ratings on this site reflect a community that's engaged and connected, even if the overall scale is smaller than what you'd find at a large American flagship university. It's a tighter-knit scene, and members tend to be genuinely close within their chapters.
