University of Nebraska, Omaha - UNO Overview

  About Greek Life at UNO

UNO is a mid-size urban commuter school in Omaha, and that commuter identity shapes pretty much everything about campus life — including the Greek system. It's smaller and more close-knit than what you'd find at a flagship state university, but there's still a real range of organizations represented across multiple councils.

On the fraternity side, you've got IFC chapters like Lambda Chi Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Theta Chi, plus NPHC fraternities including Kappa Alpha Psi and Phi Beta Sigma, and Sigma Lambda Beta representing the Multicultural Greek Council. Sororities cover similar ground — Panhellenic chapters like Alpha Xi Delta, Chi Omega, Sigma Kappa, and Zeta Tau Alpha alongside NPHC sororities Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Lambda Gamma on the MGC side. So across IFC, Panhellenic, NPHC, and MGC, there's actually a solid mix of councils for a school this size.

Don't expect a traditional Greek Row. UNO chapters generally don't have dedicated houses the way you'd see at a residential campus. That means recruitment and social events tend to happen in university spaces, off-campus venues, or through chapter-organized outings rather than anything tied to a house or a specific street.

Recruitment here is more relaxed than what you'd experience at a Big Ten school. Formal rush exists, but the process is less intense and more personal. A lot of people find their way into chapters through existing friendships or campus involvement rather than through a structured multi-week recruitment event.

Because UNO draws a lot of commuter and working students, Greek life functions more as a specific campus community than the dominant social scene. Philanthropy and community service tend to be central to how chapters present themselves and stay active, and organizations regularly participate in campus-wide events. It's a smaller system, which means the people involved tend to be pretty invested in keeping their chapters going.
