Alabama A&M University - AAMU Overview

  About Greek Life at AAMU

Alabama A&M is an HBCU located in Normal, Alabama, just outside Huntsville, and like most HBCUs, its Greek scene is built entirely around the Divine Nine — the historically Black fraternities and sororities that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). There's no IFC or Panhellenic presence here. It's all NPHC, all the time.

The fraternities on campus are Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma. On the sorority side, you've got Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. That's a solid representation of the Divine Nine, and all eight organizations are active on campus.

The intake process at HBCU schools is different from what you might picture if you're thinking of the traditional IFC rush week model. NPHC chapters don't do open recruitment the same way. You'll typically need to meet GPA and credit hour requirements, and interest periods happen on each chapter's own timeline. It's a more selective, structured process and it takes time — most people don't cross until their sophomore year or later.

At AAMU, Greek life is genuinely woven into campus culture. Step shows, Homecoming strolls, yard events — these are the moments where Greek membership gets visible, and they're a big part of what makes the social calendar at an HBCU feel distinct. Greek orgs here are tied closely to community service and chapter legacy, which matters a lot in how members carry themselves on and off campus.

Don't expect Greek Row with big chapter houses lined up next to each other. Most NPHC chapters at schools like AAMU don't operate out of dedicated housing the way IFC chapters might at larger PWIs. Chapters tend to hold events on yard spaces and in university facilities instead.

Overall, it's a smaller Greek community by the numbers, but size isn't really the point here. The chapters that are present have deep roots in the HBCU tradition and strong ties to their national organizations.
