University of California, Los Angeles - UCLA Overview

  About Greek Life at UCLA

UCLA is a massive public research university in Los Angeles with over 30,000 undergrads, and the Greek system here exists as one slice of a very big, very active campus social scene. It's not a school where Greek life dominates everything, but it's definitely not invisible either. The system is genuinely sizeable, with a solid mix of fraternities and sororities spread across multiple governing councils.

The main councils you'll encounter are IFC (Interfraternity Council) for most of the men's fraternities, Panhellenic for the women's sororities, and NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) for the historically Black fraternities and sororities. There's also a Multicultural Greek Council presence, which includes organizations like Gamma Zeta Alpha, Chi Delta Theta, and others that serve specific cultural communities on campus. That mix means the Greek scene at UCLA is broader in identity and focus than what you'd find at a lot of schools.

Chapters represented here include well-known nationals like Sigma Chi, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Chi Omega, Delta Gamma, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Alpha Phi, and Pi Beta Phi, alongside NPHC organizations like Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Delta Sigma Theta, and Sigma Gamma Rho. There are also some engineering and professional Greek organizations in the mix, which makes sense given how strong UCLA's STEM programs are.

Rush and recruitment work pretty much the way you'd expect for a big California public school. IFC formal recruitment typically happens in the fall, while Panhellenic runs a structured formal recruitment process with multiple rounds. NPHC chapters use an intake process rather than traditional rush, and timing varies by chapter.

One thing to know about UCLA specifically: most chapters don't have traditional Greek Row houses the way you'd see at a school like USC or a big SEC campus. Some chapters have off-campus houses, but the housing situation is more scattered than centralized. That shapes the social dynamic a bit — events and gatherings tend to happen across Westwood and surrounding neighborhoods rather than on one concentrated strip.

Philanthropy and community service are a real part of the culture here, consistent with UCLA's broader emphasis on civic engagement. Most chapters run their own fundraising events and are connected to national philanthropic causes. The overall activity level across the system is high, with a lot of discussion and engagement among members both on and off campus.
