Alcorn State University - ASU Overview

  About Greek Life at ASU

Alcorn State University is one of the oldest historically Black universities in the country, and that history runs straight through its Greek community. Situated in Lorman, Mississippi, ASU is a smaller HBCU, and the Greek system here reflects that — it's an intimate scene built around the Divine Nine, not a massive multi-council operation with dozens of chapters.

All of the organizations present at Alcorn fall under the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), which is standard for HBCUs. You've got representation from several of the founding fraternities — Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma — alongside sororities including Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. There's no IFC or Panhellenic council in the traditional sense. NPHC is the whole picture here.

The intake process at NPHC organizations is different from what you might know about traditional rush at predominantly white institutions. It's more selective, typically less public, and happens on the organization's own timeline rather than a set recruitment week. Chapters decide when and how they bring in new members, so don't expect a formal rush period with events plastered across campus every August.

Because ASU's enrollment is on the smaller side, Greek life is visible but not overwhelming. The organizations that are active on campus tend to show up at step shows, yard events, and community service initiatives — those are the main ways chapters make their presence known. Step shows in particular are a big deal at HBCUs, and Alcorn is no exception. Probate shows, which are public reveals of new members, also draw a lot of attention when they happen.

Don't expect chapter houses in the way you'd see at large PWIs. On-campus housing specifically for Greek chapters isn't really the setup here. Chapters operate more through their yard presence and campus programming than through a designated Greek row.
