Shaw University - SU Overview

  About Greek Life at SU

Shaw University, one of the oldest historically Black universities in the country, has a Greek scene that's rooted in NPHC tradition. The school is a small HBCU located in Raleigh, North Carolina, and that context matters a lot when you're trying to understand how Greek life works here. This isn't a big state school where tens of thousands of students are rushing in the fall. It's a tighter-knit campus, and the Greek community reflects that.

All of the fraternities and sororities here are part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council — the Divine Nine. You've got fraternities like Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, and Iota Phi Theta represented, alongside sororities including Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho. There's no IFC or Panhellenic council here in the traditional sense. It's NPHC through and through.

Membership intake at NPHC organizations works differently than the open recruitment you might associate with predominantly white institutions. The process is more selective and structured, often happening in the spring semester, and chapters control their own intake timelines. You'll want to spend time on campus first, build your GPA, and get involved before seriously pursuing membership in any of these organizations.

On an HBCU campus like Shaw, the Divine Nine carry real cultural weight. Step shows, Homecoming week, and yard events are where you'll see Greek life most visibly on display. These organizations have deep ties to community service and social justice — that's baked into NPHC history going back over a century. Chapter housing in the traditional Greek Row sense isn't a defining feature here, which is pretty standard for most HBCUs. The presence is felt more through events and campus programming than through residential spaces.

Shaw's Greek community is on the smaller side overall, which means the chapters that are active tend to be well known by the broader student body. Members are generally visible figures on campus.
