Savannah State University - SSU Overview

  About Greek Life at SSU

Savannah State University is a historically Black university sitting right on the Georgia coast, and that HBCU identity shapes pretty much everything about how Greek life works on campus. The organizations here are all part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council — the Divine Nine — which is the traditional Greek governing body at most HBCUs. There's no IFC or Panhellenic council in the typical sense you'd see at a predominantly white institution.

The chapters active on campus cover a solid cross-section of the Divine Nine, including fraternities like Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma, along with sororities Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. That's a meaningful presence for a school of SSU's size, and collectively these organizations have long histories tied to Black leadership, scholarship, and community service.

Intake — which is what NPHC organizations call their membership process — works differently than the open rush you'd see at schools with IFC chapters. It's more selective, typically happens once a year or less, and tends to be a less public process. If you're interested, you generally spend time getting to know a chapter and demonstrating your commitment before anything formal happens.

SSU is a smaller school, so the Greek community here is close-knit rather than sprawling. These organizations still carry a lot of cultural weight on campus though. Step shows, probates, and community service events are a real part of campus life, and crossing into a Divine Nine organization at an HBCU carries a different kind of significance than pledging at a larger research university. Housing follows the typical NPHC model — chapters here don't operate dedicated fraternity or sorority houses the way IFC chapters often do at bigger schools.
