Roosevelt University - RU Overview

  About Greek Life at RU

Roosevelt University is a smaller, urban school planted right in the heart of downtown Chicago, and its Greek system reflects that — it's a more intimate community than what you'd find at a Big Ten school across the state. That said, there are active chapters here spanning both historically Black Greek-letter organizations and more traditional women's fraternities, so there's real variety in what's represented on campus.

The organizations at RU fall under the NPHC umbrella as well as Panhellenic. On the NPHC side, you've got fraternities like Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Phi Beta Sigma, along with sororities Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Sigma Gamma Rho. Alpha Gamma Delta rounds things out on the Panhellenic side. These are well-established national organizations with deep histories and strong identities, even if the local chapters are smaller than you'd see at a traditional residential campus.

Because Roosevelt is largely a commuter school in an urban setting, Greek life functions differently here than it does at schools with sprawling residential campuses. There's no Greek Row, and chapters don't have houses. Social life in the city naturally competes for students' attention, so Greek organizations tend to carve out their presence through events, community service, step shows, and campus programming rather than through weekend parties at chapter houses.

Recruitment and intake processes follow the national standards for each council. NPHC chapters in particular use a membership intake process rather than a traditional open rush, so if you're interested in those organizations, expect a more structured and selective timeline. The Panhellenic chapter runs recruitment more in line with what you'd expect from a traditional sorority process, though on a smaller scale given the size of the school.

Greek life at Roosevelt isn't the dominant force on campus social culture the way it might be at a state flagship, but the chapters that are here are genuinely active and connected to their national organizations' traditions of scholarship, service, and brotherhood or sisterhood.
