Santa Clara University - SCU Overview

  About Greek Life at SCU

Santa Clara University is a mid-size Jesuit school in the heart of Silicon Valley, and its Greek system reflects the campus's generally collaborative, community-oriented culture. There are a solid number of chapters here spanning both IFC fraternities and Panhellenic sororities, along with multicultural Greek organizations that add to the overall mix. It's not an enormous system, but it's genuinely active and has a real presence on campus.

The IFC governs the fraternities, which include well-known national chapters like Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Chi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Alpha Tau Omega, Theta Chi, Kappa Sigma, Zeta Beta Tau, and a few others. On the Panhellenic side, you've got chapters like Alpha Phi, Alpha Delta Pi, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Kappa Kappa Gamma. There are also multicultural organizations present, including Lambda Sigma Gamma, Sigma Lambda Beta, and Chi Upsilon Zeta, which operate under their own council structures.

One thing to know about SCU is that it's a private university without traditional Greek Row housing. Chapters don't have dedicated houses on campus the way you'd see at a big state school. Social events, chapter meetings, and recruitment activities happen through other venues, which does change the overall feel of Greek life here compared to larger schools.

Recruitment happens in the fall and sometimes spring depending on the chapter. Because SCU is smaller than most universities with Greek systems, rush tends to be a more personal process. You're getting to know a smaller pool of people, and that cuts both ways — it's easier to find your footing, and the chapters themselves are more tight-knit as a result.

Philanthropy is genuinely woven into chapter life here, which fits with the Jesuit emphasis on service that runs throughout the university. Chapters regularly participate in community service and fundraising events, and that's not just a formality — it tends to be a real part of how chapters operate. SCU's surrounding Bay Area location also means members have access to a lot of volunteer and community engagement opportunities beyond the campus itself.
