knowing sisters pre-rush?
by: Sorority RushHey, I'm a pnm and I overheard older girls in my Chem class talk about how most is decided pre rush since it's spring rush this time. Basically I don't know a ton of upper class men who are sororities and don't want that to effect my chance at any chapter. Is this true? Is most of the girls they want decided pre recruitment since older girls already know the freshman? Thanks!

Don't be worried at all! While it might give someone an edge up to know a few girls in a sorority, not knowing anyone will absolutely not impact your chance of getting into a sorority. In addition, even if a PNM knows a few girls in a chapter, there's absolutely no guarantee that the girls she talks to during recruitment will have the same opinion of her. So basically, yes it will probably help somewhat to know a few people, but it definitely won't ruin or even hurt your chances if you don't know anyone.

While it's definitely great to be on a chapter's radar before recruitment (especially helpful when it comes to matching you up with actives), being a "household name" if you will also comes with some risks. A lot can change before the final bid lists are made: girls can not make the GPA cut off, a PNM might get super drunk at a party before recruitment starts next semester and make a fool of herself, or the conversations might just not flow once a PNM walks into recruitment. If a chapter knows who you are for a good reason, like you're in someone's class or in the same student org, that's great, but absolutely nothing is guaranteed until you have a bid in your hands. Besides, you might know a bunch of girls in one chapter and realize once recruitment starts that you really click with another house! Most actives have friends in multiple chapters, so even if you do know some girls, it's not what's going to make or break your recruitment.

I feel like that’s far more true for fraternities than sororities,
Especially since they’ve had more rush-oriented interactions with PNMs. There are fewer than 300 PNMs signed up for formal recruitment as of right now, so things are far from decided.
