University of Montana - UM Overview

  About Greek Life at UM

Nestled in Missoula at the base of the Rocky Mountains, the University of Montana is a mid-size public school with a strong outdoor culture and a tight-knit campus feel. The Greek system here is on the smaller side, with a handful of IFC fraternities and Panhellenic sororities making up the community. There's no NPHC or MGC presence to speak of at this point, so the system runs pretty much entirely through those two councils.

The fraternities include Kappa Sigma, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, and Sigma Phi Epsilon. On the sorority side, you've got Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Kappa Kappa Gamma. These are all nationally recognized organizations with chapters across the country, so if you're coming in already familiar with a particular fraternity or sorority, there's a decent chance it's represented here.

Rush and recruitment at UM follow pretty standard IFC and Panhellenic formats. Formal recruitment for sororities tends to be more structured with multiple rounds, while fraternity rush is generally more informal and spread out over the first few weeks of the semester. Most chapters have houses, and Greek Row is a real presence on campus, which gives the community a bit more visibility than you'd expect given the system's size.

Missoula has a very outdoorsy, independent vibe, and that shapes campus culture in general. Greek life exists here and has a real social presence, but it doesn't dominate the social scene the way it might at a larger SEC or Big 12 school. A lot of students are just as likely to spend their weekends hiking, skiing, or floating the Clark Fork River. That said, the chapters that are here tend to be active with philanthropy events, intramural sports, and homecoming activities, which keeps them connected to the broader campus.

Because the community is relatively small, there's a more close-knit feel between chapters than you'd find at a school with dozens of organizations. Members tend to know people across different houses pretty well, and inter-Greek events reflect that. Philanthropy culture is present, with chapters participating in both local Missoula causes and their national organizations' signature events throughout the year.
