St. Lawrence University - SLU Overview

  About Greek Life at SLU

Tucked away in Canton, New York — a small town in the North Country near the Adirondacks — St. Lawrence University is a small liberal arts school where community tends to form tightly just by nature of the setting. That context matters for understanding how Greek life fits in here. The system is on the smaller side, with a handful of Panhellenic sororities and a couple of IFC fraternities making up the bulk of organized Greek activity on campus.

On the fraternity side, Alpha Tau Omega and Beta Theta Pi are the active IFC chapters. Sororities include Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and the local chapter Kappa Delta Sigma, giving Panhellenic a bit more presence than the fraternity side. Because SLU's overall enrollment is pretty small, even a modest Greek system represents a meaningful slice of campus social life.

Recruitment at a school like this tends to feel more personal than what you'd see at a large state university. There's no massive Greek Row with hundreds of chapters competing for attention — it's a smaller pool of organizations, and the process reflects that. Panhellenic sororities typically hold formal recruitment in the fall, while IFC chapters run a more informal intake process.

At SLU, Greek organizations tend to be woven into broader campus social life rather than existing in a totally separate bubble. The school's residential Greek housing is part of the on-campus experience, and chapters participate in philanthropy events alongside other campus organizations throughout the year. Given the rural location and the fact that campus is pretty self-contained, Greek chapters do contribute meaningfully to the overall social calendar, especially during the long upstate New York winters when on-campus programming becomes even more central to student life.
