University of British Columbia - UBC Overview

  About Greek Life at UBC

UBC is a massive research university in Vancouver with over 50,000 students, and the Greek system here is a smaller slice of that overall population. That said, it's an active community with a solid number of IFC fraternities and Panhellenic sororities represented on campus. The two councils operate largely independently and coordinate their own recruitment processes throughout the academic year.

Rush at UBC works a bit differently than what you'd see at big American state schools. Formal recruitment exists, but it's generally a more low-key process than the highly produced, multi-day events you'd find at schools in the SEC or Big Ten. Panhellenic sororities tend to run a more structured recruitment cycle, while fraternity rush is typically more informal and spread out over time. If you're coming from the US expecting a massive Greek Week with thousands of people in matching outfits, just know the scale here is different.

Chapters represented on campus include fraternities like Alpha Delta Phi, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Kappa Sigma, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Gamma Delta, Psi Upsilon, Sigma Chi, Zeta Psi, and Alpha Epsilon Pi. On the sorority side, you've got Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Kappa Kappa Gamma — several of which are well-established North American chapters with long histories at the school.

Housing is part of the picture at UBC. Some chapters have houses located in the residential areas of the Point Grey campus, which gives those organizations a more traditional Greek Row feel. Not every chapter has its own house, so the experience can vary depending on which organization you're involved with.

Greek life at UBC coexists with an extremely international student body and a campus culture that draws heavily from Vancouver's broader urban environment. It's a meaningful social outlet for the students involved, but it's genuinely one of many communities on a campus this size rather than the defining feature of undergraduate social life. Philanthropy events and social mixers are regular parts of the calendar for most chapters.
