New Jersey Institute of Technology - NJIT Overview

  About Greek Life at NJIT

NJIT is a technical university in Newark, New Jersey, focused heavily on engineering, architecture, and the sciences — and the Greek system here reflects that specialized student body. It's a smaller community compared to what you'd find at a large state school, but there's a real range of organizations represented across multiple councils.

On the fraternity side, IFC chapters like Alpha Sigma Phi, Phi Sigma Kappa, Pi Kappa Phi, Psi Upsilon, Sigma Pi, Tau Delta Phi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and Theta Chi are active on campus. Sigma Alpha Epsilon also has a presence. Beyond IFC, NPHC is represented through Iota Phi Theta and Phi Beta Sigma, and MGC-affiliated Delta Epsilon Psi rounds out the fraternity options. Sororities are a smaller part of the picture, with Alpha Sigma Tau and Delta Phi Epsilon representing Panhellenic on campus.

Because NJIT has a historically male-skewed enrollment, the fraternity side of Greek life has always been more developed than the sorority side. That's just the reality of the demographics. Sorority recruitment tends to be more informal and relationship-based for that same reason.

Don't expect a traditional Greek Row here. Most chapters don't have dedicated on-campus houses in the way you'd see at a Big Ten school. Social events and chapter activities still happen, but the structure is a bit different — chapters work with university resources and off-campus spaces. Newark's proximity to New York City also means students have a lot of options outside of any one social scene.

Philanthropy and community service are a consistent part of how chapters here present themselves, which is pretty standard across Greek councils at tech-focused schools. Rush tends to be low-key compared to bigger universities — more about meeting people and finding a fit than the high-production recruitment weekends you'd see elsewhere. The academic culture at NJIT is demanding, so chapters generally understand that school comes first.
