Sorority COB Question
by: sendyI know that some chapters are participating in the COB process, but I’m curious to know if any of the “top” sororities are also participating in COB. I know that you have to have connections with someone in the sorority is important for receiving a bid in COB, but has anyone heard of someone receiving a bid from a sorority that didn’t publicly announce that they were doing COB? I’ve noticed that most sororities participate in COB, but it’s not always made public.

Yes, it happens, and no NPC sorority is required to make it public. Continuous Open Bidding is an option for any sorority chapter that either doesn't make quota during formal recruitment or falls below whatever the chapter total membership number is that is set by panhellenic. COB can technically happen at any time, but practically it only makes sense to offer those bids at the beginning of a semester. No sorority has to announce they are doing it, they are allowed to offer bids if they are eligible, and whoever accepts signs an MRABA and gets registered with panhellenic as a new member of that chapter. It's not a 'process' like a rush period.
It does not make sense for a chapter to announce they are offering COB if have very limited open spots and are already sure of who they want and who wants them. That would be misleading and unfair and a hassle to all concerned. It is only in the best interest for chapters to make an announcement if they have more than a few open spots to fill from larger December graduations. In that case they are actively recruting for quality members and you will see their announcement that they are open to COB.

It's not a 'does' or 'does not' thing for sororities, it all depends on if they are eligible from openings created by December graduations. It just depends on the year.
