COB questions for spring

by: heels

I couldn't rush in the fall because by GPA was too low as a sophomore and now I can with a 3.2. I think I can get into AXO and APhi based on conversations I had with girls I knew from home. Do I have a chance of going COB with anyone in the spring? Although in my second year, I am now classified as a Junior and will probably graduate early, will that hurt my chances and if I say I'm a sophomore, will they know?

AXO prioritizes GPA so you would have to have something absolutely stellar to offer to compensate. Also the members in the two sororities you talked to don't represent their chapters, and if they just joined in the fall take what they say with a huge grain of salt because those girls are clueless about recruitment and membership selection from the sorority side. Lying to get a bid is BAD and yes, a chapter will know because they do check before offering one. With all that said, you might as well try because you never know and you have nothing to lose. Good luck.

My friends are second years (they joined fall 24) like me but I am classified as a junior because of all of my APs and community college classes. So my aphi friend who said she will get me a bid can’t get me a bid by herself?

No, she can't get you a bid, she can only advocate for you to the rest of her chapter. Bids are a chapter decision, always. She can speak highly of you and try to get you invited to things or get others to meet with you so they will get to know you and also want to give you a bid, but no one member has that power. Also that's blatant Bid Promising if she told you that, which is strictly ILLEGAL and she could get her chapter into trouble and fined.

Do your best but don't count on anything until and unless you get a bid in hand. Your GPA may be a hard pass no matter how well anyone likes you. Or here's another scenario: if your friend is not well-liked or well-respected in her chapter, her opinion will go against you. There are always 'those' members in a chapter and honestly whoever they think is great for a bid is an automatic NO from other members. It's as much about someone's influence as it is about what members think you can bring to the chapter. Again, good luck.

Sometimes, sororities allow girls to graduate a semester early. However, if you entered UNC in 2024 and would technically be a sophomore, I believe it’s acceptable. Just because you’ve completed a certain number of credits and are now “classified” as a junior, you’re still technically a sophomore unless you apply to graduate a year early. Some people on the deans’ list counted freshmen and sophomores based on credits but still considered them to be in their respective years of entry. I think that if a sorority discovers that you’re planning to graduate a year early or become a junior, it might negatively impact your chances. I’ve heard of a junior rushing and joining AXO, but that’s the only sorority I’ve heard of that allows juniors other than Pi Phi.

People need to be careful about what you say to girl like this. She sounds Ike she wants to be in a sorority for all the wrong reasons. She will most definitely turn aphi if
she doesn’t get a bid.
