Do sororities want big pledge classes?
by: QuestionGenuine question. I know it’s super exciting on bid day to get such a large PC, but after that, are our chapters actually that excited about it? They’ve never had to deal with PCs so large, and I’m sure it’s overwhelming trying to figure out how to adjust. I know it’s common at other schools but UNC sorority houses aren’t built to continue taking PCs of 100 and reaching chapter totals of 400. Just wanted to hear people’s thoughts. I know I’m stressed.

Members in sororities that large at other schools say that they feel impersonal and institutional instead of like a sisterhood; hard to get to know your nm class, which is the crux of your entire sorority experience, and end up being a full time job for exec members to manage and administer. This realization is why sororities vote for expansion and are genuinely supportive of new chapters, they are grateful to get them and want them to succeed so everyone can have a better experience. To look on every other chapter as competition to be taken down does not work for anyone.

Desperation for clout at any cost; new sororities would take some pnm's and a share in the social scene, oh no, there goes the oligopoly! Short sighted immature chapters, lame chapter advisors, and weak panhellenic exec. No one to lead the way out of the swamp. To reap the benefits of being a panhellenic organization means putting on the panhellenic hat from time to time instead of the constant and delusional self-serving attitude.

It's about space. We're excited about the girls, but many, if not all, of the sorority houses that are at UNC are not equipped to handle this many new and active members. We are already having to have chapter in lecture halls because of fire codes before this new pledge class arrived. Another thing is that bigger pledge classes mean less cohesion, and like another person said, makes it feel less like a sisterhood and more like an institution, which is not what many active members want.

Hoping on OP’s train of thought, obviously I don’t know what chapter you’re in but do you (or anyone who sees this) think chapters will adjust their attitude and promote better panhel unity after seeing the issues caused by losing chapters? When we had 11 chapters pledge classes were much more manageable and the sizes worked well for so long. I’m not sure why everyone’s attitudes took a turn for the worse but it seems like the bullying of bottom tier chapters ramped up so much in the past 6 years and here we are now with chapters having to meet in lecture halls because we bullied two chapters off campus.

See that’s what I was thinking too but the way chapters seem so intent on bullying other chapters off this campus and voting no for expansion made me think maybe they want PCs of 100+? Like I don’t see the point in being so determined to stop other chapters from succeeding unless it was so they could have all the new mems.
