Bloomsburg University - BU Overview

  About Greek Life at BU

Bloomsburg University is a mid-size state school in central Pennsylvania, and its Greek system is a genuine part of campus life without completely defining it. The community covers multiple councils — IFC and Panhellenic handle the more traditional fraternity and sorority recruitment, while NPHC and MGC organizations are also represented on campus, giving the system a range that's broader than you might expect at a school this size.

There's a solid mix of fraternities and sororities here, spanning the full alphabet of national organizations. You've got everything from longtime IFC staples like Alpha Tau Omega, Kappa Sigma, Lambda Chi Alpha, and Tau Kappa Epsilon on the fraternity side, to Panhellenic sororities like Alpha Sigma Alpha, Delta Phi Epsilon, Phi Sigma Sigma, and Sigma Sigma Sigma. NPHC and MGC chapters including Alpha Phi Alpha, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, Lambda Sigma Upsilon, Chi Upsilon Sigma, and Mu Sigma Upsilon round things out.

Recruitment at BU follows a pretty standard pattern for a Pennsylvania State System school. IFC tends to run a more informal process compared to the structured, round-based Panhellenic formal recruitment. If you're going through Panhellenic, expect a multi-day process with preference rounds and bid day. IFC is generally more laid-back — you can meet chapters over the course of the semester rather than during one compressed rush week.

Housing is worth knowing about. This isn't a campus with a dedicated Greek Row lined with massive chapter houses. Most chapters operate out of on-campus facilities or have more modest off-campus presences, which means Greek life here is a little less visually dominant than at bigger schools with sprawling house culture.

Philanthropy is a real part of the culture. Most chapters participate in campus-wide service events and run their own fundraisers throughout the year, which is pretty standard for schools in this region. Greek organizations also stay connected to broader campus programming through student government and university events, so there's some overlap with the wider campus social calendar rather than Greek life existing in its own separate bubble.
