too many sororities

by: Illini

There are way too many houses on campus tbh; so many of them are irrelevant and they just keep adding more.

There should be more sororities, and there should be a limit on size.

That way sisterhood would be stronger, there would be more options, the houses would have more distinctive characters, and frat/soror ratio would be closer. You can't have a real sisterhood with 300 (or whatever) girls.

Bring back ZTA, SSS, PBX, DPhiE, ASA, probably a couple of others I forgot.

I agree that smaller houses= stronger sisterhood, but recruitment already is really tough with the number of houses we have; many don't even meet quota and it's super overwhelming for pnms.

You have made general statements, allow me to answer in general: current students have many extracurricular activities available to them, some of which do not cost as much time or money as fraternal orgs.

Sorority recruitment quota was down this year compared to last. During the past decade UIUC welcomed Alpha Xi Delta (2008), lost Phi Mu (2011), lost Phi Sigma Sigma (2011), re-welcomed Phi Sigma Sigma (2013), re-welcomed Phi Mu (2016), then lost Sigma Kappa (2016). Quite the mercurial campus situation!

The use of the NPC's RFM method during formal recruitment allows the highest percentage of pnms who maximize their options placement within a sorority and over time tends to equalize each chapter's membership numbers.

If some day many more pnms join our groups bringing ZTA, TPA, DPhiE, AST, AEPhi, ASA or Tri Sigs to UIUC may seem important. But the fact remains a lot of panhellenic research and reflection needs to happen before such an affair can occur.

Also if you look at the Indiana University greekrank site there have been numerous sad posts against their recent NPC colony groups because these groups are 'newer' NPC members with fewer total members nationally. These 'newer' NPC groups also have no current IU housing, and many simply cannot afford housing if/when they colonize on larger U.S. campuses. So bringing any/some of these smaller NPC's to UIUC might not be in their or our best interests.

I think you meant Sigma Kappa to UIUC, as AEPhi is already here.

Meant to vote this up but clicked down instead. Uiuc is def another school that does need more sororities colonizing strongly. However PBX isn’t a Panhellenic sorority just fyi

TBH Sigma Kappa, while enjoying a long history here, has opened then closed three different times (1906-41; 1946-68; 1975-2016). Their nationals made a very difficult recent decision to close the chapter after years of helpful attempts to save them. It just wasn't meant for them to be here. I have never heard of any NPC group attempting the 4th activation of one particular chapter, and that's what SK would be doing if they returned.

There were some really good posts here. Nice to see on this site.

Do you think new chapters would have a better chance if houses were limited to a certain number of girls. Not a minimum (quota), but rather a maximum. I don't know average chapter size, but let's say lower it by 50. Them you would have let's say an additional 800 girls for the new let's say 5 chapters. Then numbers would be more even.

My numbers are very rough, I know the number of chapters but not the average size.

Just trying to encourage discussion, not claiming to know the answer.

The biggest number NPC groups that were ever at UIUC all at once may be 24, during the booming pnm # years of 1979-1989. Many campuses nationwide experienced high NPC greek chapter growth during the 1980's, and UIUC was no exception. Then just as suddenly the number of pnms nationwide dropped-off again (baby bust) and UIUC lost four NPC groups by 1992.

The entire NPC methodology of recruitment and extension has evolved since 1992. Yet sororities today take into account the same basic areas of available finances, housing, alum support, campus 'fit', and individual sorority group specifications before sending extension packets to any campus looking for sorority colonies. UIUC is not currently looking into sorority expansion.

Trying to balance the number of women in each house by lowering campus total and adding campus chapters is not normally done. While it's true some groups that have been on campus before may desire to return, the proper time is not now.

I don't see why you'd be upset about there being "too many" sororities. We have many groups, which allows girls to find a better fit and for U of I to not have the huge chapters and super harsh competition of some other state schools with large greek systems.
