physical house and fraternity dominance

by: lion

How much do you guys think a fraternity's house actually impacts how they are perceived socially? I've noticed frats with nice houses like pikes, sigs, taus, acacia, delts, beta, phi psi and phi delts have a perceived higher rank so to speak. Do you guys think the physical houses play a role?

Not as much as they used to, because chapters are larger than in past years, and fewer people live in-house than in past years. Of course, a nice house is still a plus, just less so than before.

Pikes only recently got their big beautiful house. I will give them credit, they became top tier while living in a relatively crappy house. Now they also have a nice house.

Delts until a few years ago, lived in the house now occupied by Sigma Pi. So they also became top tier in a nice but not spectacular house.

Betas has a mansion, but no one currently would call them top tier. They have recolonized fairly well compared to some others, and I'm sure the house was a plus, along with having a guy from Nationals living here for a full year and recruiting.

Just some random comments. Bottom line though - join where you fit in with and like spending time with the actual guys.

Sigs is the outlier. their house is old, decrepit on the inside , and aesthetically bland. However the guys inside make the difference.

I wouldn't consider beta to be comparable to pikes, sigs, taus, acacia, or delts like OP does, but they are comparable to phi delts and phi psi.

And having a mansion looking house does make a difference. A huge house is part of the traditional american college fraternity experience.

Betas are NOT even close to Phi Delts and Phi Psi yet. They did a decent job recolonizing, but let's not put the horse ahead of the cart here.

I agree that having a mansion looking house helps recruiting, but I wonder if you want guys who join because of your building. If anyone is familiar with Acacia history, some alum(s) donated a ton of money and they built a ridiculous mansion, by far the nicest house on campus and a block from KAM's. Then the undergrads screwed up, got kicked off campus, and that mansion is now the Library and Information Science Building.

Acacia did have a sick house in the 1980's until they got kicked off.
At that time, Acacia was definitely top tier with Sigs and Betas...while ATO & Pike were "maybe"top 10.

Regarding nice houses & alumni influence, at that time, Phi Delt and Sigma Nu also landed some good sorority exchanges and Blocks.

That was then, this is now........Which houses will dominate in 2030 ?

SAE will not even be top 10 in 10 years.
Beta might be top 5 in 2030, but not anytime before then.

Sigs, Pikes, Delts - most likely in the top 5, the other two To Be Determined - could be someone we never thought of.
Phi Delts and FIJI - eh, they are ok but not outstanding.

My dad pledged back in 1987........

He said Acacia was the most desired at selective house during those years.

A group of his friends who became Pikes & ATOs were rejected by Acacia, Betas & Sigs...

Just a mere data point.......

ATO trolls on this board are comical.

Any comment that suggests ATO is, was, or will be a middle tier house is quickly disputed as if their femininity is hurting.

I imagine either a 50 year old ATO alumni lurking 24/7 on this board or an active ATO who was rejected by Acacia, Betas or Phi Delts.....of which there are many.

Get a life and get out a play a round this fine Saturday morning yo wannabe !

but I doubt there are any current ATO actives who were rejected by Beta.

Beta is barely out of colony status, still lots of goobers. Future to be determined.

Acacia and Phi Delts are good, so there are probably current ATO's that were rejected by those houses.
