Tufts University - TU Overview

  About Greek Life at TU

Tufts is a mid-size research university just outside Boston in Medford, Massachusetts, and its Greek system reflects the school's overall character — academically serious, socially engaged, but not defined by any single scene. The IFC and Panhellenic councils both operate on campus, with a solid handful of fraternities and a smaller number of sororities making up the community. It's a more intimate Greek system compared to what you'd find at a large state school, but the chapters that are here are genuinely active.

Fraternities at Tufts tend to have off-campus houses in the surrounding Medford and Somerville neighborhoods, which shapes how social life works. A lot of the fraternity social calendar happens at those houses rather than on a dedicated Greek row. Sororities don't typically have residential houses, so Panhellenic life is more organizationally centered than it is place-based.

Rush for IFC chapters usually happens in the fall, while Panhellenic formal recruitment has its own separate process. Because Tufts draws a competitive, academically focused student body, the Greek community tends to skew toward members who are balancing serious coursework, athletics, internships, and other campus involvement alongside their chapter commitments. Philanthropy and community service are a real part of how chapters present themselves and operate.

Greek life is one part of the social fabric at Tufts, but it's not the dominant force on campus the way it might be at a larger university with a big football culture. Plenty of students are involved in theater, club sports, activism, and other organizations that carry just as much social weight. That said, the chapters here have consistent membership and stay involved in campus life year-round. Organizations like Sigma Nu, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Zeta Beta Tau, Chi Omega, Alpha Phi, and Kappa Alpha Theta are among the groups you'll encounter, each with their own programming and membership culture.

Being close to Boston also factors into campus social life generally — students have access to a major city, which means Greek events aren't the only option on weekends. That proximity probably keeps the Greek system from being as all-encompassing as it might be on a more isolated campus, but it also means chapters have a lot to offer in terms of networking and events that take advantage of the broader Boston area.
