Texas Southern University - TSU Overview

  About Greek Life at TSU

Texas Southern University is an HBCU in the heart of Houston's Third Ward, and like most HBCUs, its Greek system runs through the National Pan-Hellenic Council. That's the defining structure here — you won't find an IFC or a traditional Panhellenic setup. The organizations on campus are the Divine Nine, and that's what Greek life at TSU looks like.

The chapters present include some of the most historically significant Black Greek-letter organizations in the country: Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, and Iota Phi Theta on the fraternity side, and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho representing the sororities. These aren't just campus clubs — they're chapters of national organizations with deep roots in Black history, civil rights, and community service.

The intake process at NPHC organizations is different from what you might picture at a typical rush week. There's no open recruitment in the same sense. Prospective members go through a formal membership intake process, and chapters control their own timelines. It's not something you just walk up and sign a bid card for — it takes time, usually at least a semester or more of getting to know the organization before anything happens.

On an HBCU campus like TSU, Greek-lettered organizations carry real cultural weight. Step shows are a big deal. You'll see chapters performing at events, doing community service in the Houston area, and showing out during homecoming, which is one of the biggest weeks of the year on campus. The letters people wear mean something beyond just social affiliation.

Don't expect a Greek Row with chapter houses lining a street. That's not typically how NPHC chapters operate, and TSU is no different. Chapters hold their presence through events, yard shows, and visibility on campus rather than residential houses. The community is on the smaller side in terms of total membership compared to large PWI systems, but the organizational culture is tightly connected to the broader campus identity.
