rushing a fraternity as a veteran

by: current military

Hey y’all, I’m getting out of the military relatively soon, and I was wondering if there was any negative stigma towards rushing a fraternity as a slightly older guy. I’ll be in my early 20s when I go through rush, if that helps.

Age doesn’t really matter; however, which year in college you are is a factor (freshman, sophomore, etc).

Can’t you just go to bars?

Can’t I just do both though?

Thete's no stigma but really, do you want to be around that immaturity? Personally, I say find a sports or some other org, or get involved in THON thru an org or as an independent.

First off, thank you for serving. Second off, we have a kid in my fraternity who was 21 as a freshman due to serving in the armed forces. He’s one of the best guys we have and he had no trouble getting bids to other places too.

Appreciate the response man, I’m going to be a bit older than him but this was a big help.

I’m good looking and social and didn’t get a bid so I recommend setting your expectations low

Thank you for your service. Serving in the military is a plus in my opinion and shows your strong character. Be yourself and there wont be any chance being in the military will lessen your chance of getting into a frat.

Same advice I’d give to anyone for rush. Dress well, talk to lots of brothers, have many options (rush lots of houses), make a good impression. Join the house you think you fit in best.

Most importantly, MAKE SURE TO GO A TON OF HOUSES. I hear too often of kids only going to like 10 frats and not getting invited back. Hell, you’d be surprised how many go to 20 places and don’t get invited back. Spread your options as much as you can while also talking to lots of brothers at each house.

Sounds good man, I was planning on continuing playing rugby at Penn State as well, but now I’m just excited to get out and go to school. Everything I’ve been hearing about Greek life here sounds great.
