Stevens Institute of Technology - SIT Overview

  About Greek Life at SIT

Stevens Institute of Technology sits on a hill overlooking the Hudson River in Hoboken, New Jersey, and it's a fairly small, engineering-focused school — so the Greek system here operates on a tighter scale than you'd find at a big state university. That said, it's still a meaningful part of campus social life given the overall size of the student body.

The system is organized primarily through IFC for the fraternities and Panhellenic for the sororities. There's also multicultural Greek representation on campus through organizations like Lambda Upsilon Lambda and Omega Phi Beta, which fall outside the traditional IFC/Panhellenic structure. All told, there are quite a few chapters active on campus — a solid mix for a school this size.

Recruitment at Stevens typically follows a more relaxed, interest-based format compared to the formal, highly structured rush you'd see at SEC schools or large state flagships. Fraternity recruitment is generally informal at first, with events spread out so you can meet brothers across multiple chapters before making any decisions. Panhellenic recruitment follows a more structured process, as is standard for sororities nationally.

Because Stevens is a STEM-heavy school, academics are demanding, and Greek chapters here tend to reflect that. Brotherhood and sisterhood events, philanthropy work, and social functions all happen regularly, but members are balancing serious course loads at the same time. Greek life here isn't the only social scene on campus, but for a lot of students it becomes a core part of their college experience — especially given that Hoboken itself offers a lot just off campus.

Housing varies by chapter. Some fraternities have on-campus or nearby houses, but not all chapters have a dedicated house, which is pretty typical for a smaller private school in an urban-adjacent setting. Philanthropy involvement is present across chapters, with organizations participating in both national and local service initiatives throughout the year.
