Stephen F. Austin State University - SFASU Overview

  About Greek Life at SFASU

Nestled in the Piney Woods of East Texas, Stephen F. Austin State University is a mid-size regional school in Nacogdoches, and its Greek system reflects the tight-knit, community-oriented feel that defines the campus. It's not a Big 12 powerhouse with a massive Greek Row, but there's a real presence here across multiple councils and a good number of chapters for a school this size.

The system is organized across several governing bodies. IFC covers most of the traditional fraternities, and Panhellenic oversees the sororities. The NPHC is also active here, with historically Black fraternities and sororities representing a meaningful part of the broader Greek community. You'll find chapters like Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta among others. On the IFC and Panhellenic side, there are well-known nationals like Sigma Chi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Kappa Sigma, Phi Delta Theta, Alpha Chi Omega, Chi Omega, and Delta Delta Delta, along with quite a few others rounding out the list.

Rush at SFA tends to be more relaxed than what you'd see at a University of Texas or Texas A&M. Formal recruitment happens in the fall for both fraternities and sororities, and the process is generally accessible. It's not the kind of school where you feel like you're competing for a spot in a hyper-selective system. That said, chapters do put effort into their events and getting to know potential members properly.

In terms of housing, most chapters don't have the large standalone houses you'd see at bigger flagship schools. Some organizations have chapter facilities or designated spaces on or near campus, but Greek life here is less defined by a physical Greek Row and more by the events, philanthropy work, and social programming chapters put together throughout the year. Philanthropy is genuinely active — most chapters are involved in fundraising events and service projects tied to their national organizations' causes.

Socially, Greek life at SFA is a real part of campus culture without completely dominating it. It's one of several ways students get plugged in, alongside athletics, student organizations, and the general small-city college town feel of Nacogdoches. The community is close enough that Greek members tend to be pretty visible on campus.
