Depauw University - DU Overview

  About Greek Life at DU

DePauw University is a small liberal arts school in Greencastle, Indiana, and Greek life is genuinely central to how social life works on campus. A significant portion of the student body — historically a majority — affiliates with a fraternity or sorority, which is pretty unusual for a school this size. That level of participation shapes everything from weekend plans to how students build their friend groups.

The system is organized across multiple councils. IFC covers the traditionally-structured fraternities, while Panhellenic oversees the sororities. NPHC chapters are also represented on campus, including historically Black fraternities and sororities like Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Phi Beta Sigma, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and others. That gives students options across different kinds of organizations with different cultures and histories.

On the fraternity side, you've got a solid mix of chapters — Alpha Tau Omega, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Tau Delta, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Gamma Delta, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, and several others. Sorority options include Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Pi Beta Phi, among others. Most of the larger chapters have houses, and Greek Row is a real, physical part of the campus experience.

Recruitment for IFC and Panhellenic chapters follows a fairly structured format. Panhellenic runs formal recruitment in the fall, and fraternities typically do their process in the spring. NPHC chapters operate on an intake process that's separate from traditional rush and runs on its own timeline, usually coordinated through the national organizations.

Philanthropy is a consistent part of chapter life at DePauw. Most organizations run at least one fundraising or service event per year, and those events tend to draw participation from across campus, not just Greek-affiliated students. It's part of how chapters maintain visibility and engagement with the broader DePauw community.

Because DePauw is a small, residential campus in a small town, the Greek system carries more social weight here than it might at a larger university with more off-campus options. That's just the reality of Greencastle — campus is the scene, and Greek organizations are a big part of what that scene looks like.
