University of Southern Mississippi - USM Overview

  About Greek Life at USM

Hattiesburg is a mid-size college town in South Mississippi, and the Greek system at USM fits right into the pace and culture of campus life there. It's not a massive Greek Row school, but there's a solid and active community spread across multiple councils that plays a real role in social life on campus.

The Interfraternity Council covers the larger national fraternities, with chapters like Sigma Chi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Kappa Alpha Order, and several others represented. Panhellenic includes the major national sororities — Chi Omega, Kappa Delta, Alpha Delta Pi, Phi Mu, Delta Gamma, Pi Beta Phi, and more. Beyond IFC and Panhellenic, the National Pan-Hellenic Council is also active at USM, with all the Divine Nine organizations present, including Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and the rest. That gives the overall Greek community a pretty broad range of organizations and traditions.

Rush at USM follows a fairly traditional Southern format. Panhellenic recruitment runs in a structured, formal style in the fall with multiple rounds. IFC tends to run a bit more informally with continuous open recruitment mixed in. If you're going through formal recruitment, expect it to be a full week commitment.

Housing is part of the picture here. Several IFC fraternities have chapter houses, either on or near campus, which gives those chapters a physical presence that anchors a lot of social activity. Not every chapter has a house, but for the ones that do, it's a big part of how they function socially throughout the year.

Philanthropy events are a consistent part of how chapters stay visible on campus. Things like philanthropy weeks, Greek Week competitions, and fundraising events show up throughout the academic year and tend to draw broader student participation. USM has a strong sense of school pride tied to its athletics, particularly football, and Greek organizations are usually well-represented at those events too.

Overall, this is a Greek community with real depth across its councils, and one that reflects both the traditions of a Southern public university and the broader cultural makeup of the campus.
